My dog happened to poop in the house and while cleaning it I noticed there were many worms in it. I think you may be thinking of round worms or more mainly tape worms (which are not going to "travel" once pooped out). Heartworms are transmitted through the mosquito which serves as the intermediate host for the larval stage of the worm. Basically the mosquito bites an infected dog and the when it bites the next dog it transmits this "worm" to the next host. Adult heartworms can reach 12 inches in length and can remain in the dog’s heart for several years. This can result in heart failure and what people do not always realize is if you give a dog heartworm preventative when the dog ALREADY has heartworms it can kill the dog. This is because the medication kills worms but if these worms are already in the dogs heart it can block off the blood flow enough to cause cardiac arrest. The treatment of heartworm disease is done with a coctail of drugs, one of which is and an arsenic compound. Many dogs do not survive the treatment. Prevention is key. Make sure to have your dog get a blood test for heartworms and then keep the dog on a prevention medication such as Heartguard Plus every month.
